Plextor M8Pe 256GB NVMe SSD Review (2026)

Posted on May 17, 2026 by Raymond Chen

The Plextor M8Pe 256GB hits a reasonable balance in Plextor's NVMe MLC line — 2,000 MB/s reads, 900 MB/s writes, and 384 TBW endurance with a genuine DRAM cache and five-year warranty.

Controller & Memory

The M8Pe 256GB pairs the Marvell 88SS1093 "Eldora" eight-channel NVMe controller with Toshiba 15nm MLC NAND and 512 MB of LPDDR3 DRAM. The 88SS1093 was one of the earliest PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe controllers available, featuring an eight-channel triple-core design. Plextor wrote custom firmware rather than using Marvell's reference implementation, which historically gives them an edge over companies that simply re-brand reference designs.

The 256GB is the second-smallest capacity in the M8Pe line, which spans 128GB through 1TB. Write speeds scale sharply with capacity: the 128GB manages just 500 MB/s, the 256GB hits 900 MB/s, the 512GB reaches 1,300 MB/s, and the 1TB tops out at 1,400 MB/s. The 384 TBW endurance at this capacity is strong thanks to the MLC flash. The drive is available as M8PeGN (bare M.2), M8PeG (with heatspreader), or M8PeY (PCIe AIC with heatsink and LEDs).

At launch, the M8Pe competed against the Samsung 950 Pro 256GB and Toshiba OCZ RD400 256GB. The Samsung generally led in benchmarks, but the M8Pe undercut it on price.

M8Pe Performance & Benchmarks

Plextor rates the M8Pe 256GB at up to 2,000 MB/s sequential reads and 900 MB/s sequential writes, with 210,000 read IOPS and 230,000 write IOPS. The write speed is a meaningful step up from the 128GB model's 500 MB/s, though still below the 512GB and 1TB variants.

  • Kingston KC2000 1 TB: 3,200 MB/s read, 2,200 MB/s write
  • Kingston KC2000 2 TB: 3,200 MB/s read, 2,200 MB/s write
  • Plextor M9Pe Series 512 GB: 3,200 MB/s read, 2,000 MB/s write
  • Plextor M9Pe Series 1 TB: 3,200 MB/s read, 2,100 MB/s write
  • Plextor M8Pe 256 GB (this drive): 2,000 MB/s read, 900 MB/s write

AnandTech's testing showed the M8Pe 512GB performing close to the Samsung 950 Pro and Toshiba OCZ RD400 in sequential workloads, with Samsung maintaining an edge in random IO and power efficiency. The 256GB model, with half the NAND dies of the 512GB, will trail the larger capacities in sustained writes. The MLC NAND and DRAM cache help maintain consistent performance during random workloads without the SLC cache volatility that TLC drives exhibit.

Endurance, TBW & Warranty

The Plextor M8Pe 256GB carries a 384 TBW endurance rating backed by a five-year limited warranty. At a typical consumer write workload of 20 to 40 GB per day, the drive would take 26 to 52 years to exhaust its endurance — far beyond the warranty period. The 2.4 million hour MTBF is above average. The five-year warranty was a key differentiator at launch, as many competing NVMe drives in this segment offered only three years.

Verdict: Is the M8Pe Worth It in 2026?

The Plextor M8Pe 256GB is a reliable NVMe SSD with MLC NAND and a DRAM cache — features that set it apart from the TLC and DRAM-less drives that dominate the mainstream segment. Its 900 MB/s writes are modest for NVMe, but the 384 TBW endurance and five-year warranty make it a durable choice for a boot drive. Modern buyers can find faster NVMe drives at similar prices, but few offer genuine MLC flash with hardware DRAM at this capacity.

+ Pros

  • 2,000 MB/s reads, 900 MB/s writes on PCIe 3.0
  • 512 MB LPDDR3 DRAM cache
  • Toshiba 15nm MLC NAND for strong endurance
  • 384 TBW with five-year warranty
  • MLC flash provides consistent write performance

- Cons

  • 900 MB/s writes — below the 512GB and 1TB models
  • 15nm planar MLC — older NAND generation
  • No included software toolbox
  • M8PeY AIC version adds cost with limited benefit

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The 2,000 MB/s reads and 210K read IOPS handle game loading well above SATA levels. The 256GB capacity fits the OS and several games. The MLC NAND and DRAM cache provide consistent performance during game installations and updates. For a larger game library, the 512GB model is a better fit.

Yes. The M8Pe 256GB includes 512 MB of LPDDR3 DRAM dedicated to the flash translation layer. This is a hardware DRAM cache on the PCB, not the software Host Memory Buffer used by DRAM-less drives. It helps maintain consistent random IO performance.

The M8Pe 256GB is rated at 384 TBW (Terabytes Written), covered by a five-year warranty. At 20 to 40 GB of writes per day, it would take 26 to 52 years to exhaust the endurance. The MLC NAND contributes to the strong endurance rating relative to capacity.

Both are PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSDs from 2016 with MLC NAND. The Samsung 950 Pro uses Samsung's own UBX controller and V-NAND, while the M8Pe uses the Marvell 88SS1093 with Toshiba 15nm MLC. The Samsung generally posts higher benchmark scores and better power efficiency thanks to its vertically integrated design. The M8Pe was typically priced lower at launch.

No. The PS5 requires a PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD with a recommended read speed of 5,500 MB/s or higher. The M8Pe is a PCIe 3.0 drive from 2016 with a maximum of 2,000 MB/s reads on the 256GB model.
